ESPELETTE – the home of the Basque Piment is a charming village in a picturesque Pyrenean setting where the houses and many traditional restaurants are adorned with hanging bunches of chillies.
These chillies are very mild but are world famous having been awarded their own official certification (AOC appellation d'origine controlee) like many champagnes, wines, and cheeses.
A drive to Espelette is a wonderful day trip from Salies for a pretty walk, a long lunch and browse through the many chilli themed delicatessens and souvenir stores. There is also a particularly good chocolatier offering free tasting samples and selling many delicious sweet treats and an unusual chilli chocolate, which is a particularly good accompaniment to champagne.
